Why Public Speaking Still Scares Us (Street Interview)

I spoke to two young women in Brisbane about public speaking. Their answers were instant:
“No, I don’t do it.”“I’d be shaking.”
That reaction is common. But one of them said something that stood out:
“Sometimes I feel like I have to do it for myself.”
She’s right — sometimes you need to face it, even if it scares you.
Stop Comparing
Many people avoid speaking because they feel others are older, smarter, or more qualified. But you don’t need to know everything — you just need to share what you know.
When I coach accountants, I don’t teach them accounting. I show them how to present with confidence. That’s my strength. And that’s the key: focus on what you bring, not what you lack.
Share What You Know
Confidence comes from contribution, not comparison. Ask yourself one question:
“Can I help my audience with what I know?”
If the answer is yes, then you already have a reason to speak. Take a breath, step up, and share.
